Do you want an easy walk before relaxing in the jacuzzi? Or perhaps a more serious tour? Would you like to look around the surroundings before dinner? Whatever you want, we have an idea for everything!
Offered programs
You can reach countless cultural and historical sights from the northernmost point of the Tolnai mountain ridge which dominates Mezőföld in the middle of Transdanubia.
The castle of Simontornya and the castle of Ozora are two historical monuments that cannot be missed, while the castle in Dég preserves the memories of the Festetics family’s rich life here.
The renovated building of Zichy Castle of Vajta, used for events, recalls the wealth of the count family.
In the István Csók Museum of Cece we can learn about the life of the famous Hungarian painter. The memorial museum in Pálfa, in the birthplace of Gyula Illyés provides insight into the life of the writer.
We offer the option of renting 2 adult men’s and 2 adult women’s electric bikes at the cellar No. 172 (carved into the loess wall). By the electric bikes you can go through the recommended hiking routes marked on the outer wall of the cellar.
Our less experienced and trained guests can also bravely venture out to explore the area.
Hiking routes
We recommend 5 hiking routes:
1.) Wandering along the two most famous defiles of Simontornya, we can descend into the city to see the former castle of the Fried family.
2.) Through the vineyard hill and defiles of Simontornya you can discover the places of local wine making, fruit growing, beautiful old and abandoned cellars, or look for a geocaching box.
3.) Starting on the medieval Székelyi Road, the most beautiful defile of the vineyard hill, passing historical memorial sites (the Styrum-Limburg chapel, the old Jewish cemetery and the old hunting lodge), going along the forest that gives prize-winning fallow buck trophies, we can return through an original black walnut forest section.
4.) Going along the red tourist line, we change to the red cross tourist line at Kisszékely and continue our journey as far as Pálfa, where – leaving the forest and the vineyard hill – we return to Simontornya on the rampart of the Sió.
5.) It is a real challenge to view the two medieval castles while cycling on the rampart of the Sió, followed by the prying eyes of herons and wild ducks, reaching the point where the Kapos river flows into the Sió. In hot weather there is little shade on this route.
The estate has its own demonstration loess wall cellars which our guests can view for free. There is a love story associated with the cellar apartment No. 168, which you can read in our brochure.
You can find the Styrum-Lymburg chapel next to the defile, on the red tourist line, 500 meters from the entrance of the estate. It is a memory of a terrible family tragedy: the last male heir lost his life so their family tree was broken.
The ancient Jewish cemetery can be found next to the defile, on the red tourist line, 2000 meters from the entrance of the estate, in the wood. The founder of Simontornya Leather Factory is buried here. It was one of the most important factories in Hungarian economic history.
